Development cooperation up close

Volunteer Program of the Erich Wesjohann Foundation

The volunteer program of the Erich Wesjohann Foundation offers young adults the opportunity to experience and understand development cooperation up close. The focus is not on short-term aid, but on structured learning and cultural exchange within existing local communities.

For a limited period, participants live in a partner community on site and take part in everyday life as well as in accompanied activities. The aim is to gain insights into sustainable project work, social structures, and cultural connections—and to develop a deeper understanding of long-term development processes.

Program idea

The program is aimed at young adults aged approximately 18 to 30. Stays typically last between six and twelve weeks. During this time, participants are fully integrated into the life of the host community. They live together with the Teresian Sisters in Malawi or Zambia.

Participants do not take on operational tasks and do not replace local workers. Instead, learning, exchange, and observation are at the forefront.

Experiences on site

During their stay, participants gain practical insights into the local realities of life:

  • Participation in school, youth, and community activities

  • Learning about social and economic project structures

  • Assisted support with simple, non-operational tasks

  • Support for agricultural projects

  • Taking part in everyday community life

  • Intercultural exchange and shared life on site

Support & safety

Before departure, participants are thoroughly prepared, including on cultural specifics, behavior, safety, and health. Throughout the entire stay, the foundation is responsible for providing care. This includes:

  • a careful selection process

  • preparation and guidance

  • dedicated contacts on site and in Germany

  • regular check-ins

  • medical, accident, and liability insurance

  • a 24-hour emergency contact

  • evacuation and return travel planning if needed

All activities take place exclusively with guidance and within clearly defined parameters.

Purpose of the program

The volunteer program is intended to build understanding—for global connections, cultural diversity, and the challenges of sustainable development. Participants gain perspectives that go far beyond a short stay abroad:

They learn how long-term structural improvements come about and why self-reliance matters more than short-term aid. This means international responsibility is not communicated in the abstract, but becomes personally tangible.
