Lilongwe / Malawi – The Hostel

Enable education. Shape the future.

A hostel combines safe housing with social commitment and provides access to education.

In close proximity to the Catholic University in Lilongwe, a hostel is being built that not only offers students accommodation but also actively helps them gain access to education. The aim is to create a safe, affordable environment for young people where they can focus on their training.

The concept goes beyond providing housing alone: students are given the opportunity to use their accommodation on discounted terms if they also get involved in the educational projects of “Little Way”. As educators, they pass on their knowledge, support children and young people on site, and thus actively contribute to the development of the community.

The building’s shell is already complete. In total, 11 rooms will be created across two floors, each designed for four people. This gives the hostel space for up to 88 students and creates a structured, communal living environment.

In the next phase, the focus will be on the interior fit-out. The rooms will be equipped, furniture will be procured, and the outdoor areas will be designed. At the same time, the necessary infrastructure will be put in place to ensure reliable operations.

Since there is no stable public supply on site, additional measures are required. These include, in particular, building a well to ensure a reliable water supply, as well as installing a solar system to guarantee an independent power supply.

The hostel stands as an example of the approach of the Erich Wesjohann Foundation: promote education, strengthen responsibility, and create sustainable structures. A place is being created where learning, commitment, and community are interconnected.

In the long term, the project is intended to ensure that education not only has an individual impact, but multiplies within society and opens up new opportunities for development.
